While there can be many causes of this problem, one thing to try in restoring your VPN connection ability in ubuntu is this:
- Open synaptics package manager (all of this is inside package manager)
- search libnm
- update libnm-util1
- install libnm-glib-vpn1
- install pptp-linux
Open the add vpn section and see if that works.
