Recently I have been working on methods to boot windows xp from USB.
I have tried nlite with a highly stripped version of XP. It was slow, and took a long time to make.
I tried various boot usb methods like hiren's, only to find its illegal.
I tried grub4dos, syslinux, isolinux and just about every other booting from usb method.
Then I found (re-found) BartPE, and a nice tool that makes the whole process very quick and easy.
- Run BartPE
- Direct it to your windows CD
- Click build (not ISO or record)
- Download PeToUSB.exe (this is NOT included with pebuilder)--PeToUSB.exe http://gocoding.com/page.php?al=petousb
- Select the folder you saved your BartPE build to, and choose the format option, and the copy option. Make sure you select your USB drive also.
- Make it go. Its done from there.
BartPE on a USB stick (booting xp from a usb stick) in less than 15 minutes.
